Ludum Dare 40

I participated in Ludum Dare 40 this weekend!  The theme was "The more you have, the worse it is."I've spent a lot of my spare time in November learning Game Maker 2 by trying to build a Tower Defense game. So, when the theme was announced I immediately thought, that sounds like a Tower Defense game!  So, that's what I made.  You play as a mage who’s been imprisoned in a maze built as a prison...

Tower Defence: Ludum Dare 40 Warmup Game

Ludum Dare is coming soon, Dec 1 and occasionally I like to use new techs during the jam. So, I’ve decided to try Gamemaker 2 this time. And in preparation for that I’m going to make a Tower Defence game as a warm up exercise and to familiarize myself with Gamemaker 2.

Here's come Ludum Dare 31! ☃☃☃ Vote Snowman! ☃☃☃ Follow me at http://ludumdare.com/compo/author/mrphil/ I'll also be streaming! Watch at http://www.twitch.tv/xmrphil

Game A Week 2

Week 2Idea: Strategy game about screening army/infantry movements using Calvary (like Napoleon did.)What went right: Nothing really. What went wrong: 1) Day light savings, always, always causes me to have some serious insomnia. I've probably spent at least 20 hours trying to fall asleep this week. 2) Lack of Time, a lot of important things came up and I wasn't able to put much time into the id...

Game A Week 1

Adriel Wallick's wonderful post-mortem about her Game A Week experiment inspired me to try it out.Week 1Idea: How many games of pong can a human play at once. What went right: 1) Unity, I got it up and running fairly fast with very little code. 2) You can play it.What went wrong: 1) Work got busy and I had to put in some overtime. This reduced the energy and time I could put into the game. 2...

Global Game Jam 2013

I participated in the Global Game Jam this year.  It was my second appearence, the first time being in 2010 on Space Exodus. Here are my brainstorming notes (on right) and pitch (on left): Heart QWOP Concept Essentially I wanted to make a QWOP style game about moving blood through the heart to the brain.  I was thinking that if you didn't do it well enough the brain would loose oxygen and then ...

Seeds Of Destruction

I've just finished Ludum Dare 23.  The theme was Tiny World, so I made a game about Seed warfare.  It came out pretty good.  You can play Seeds of Destruction: here.

Ludum Dare 21 - Conclusion

I didn't finish. I just didn't have my weekend clear.  You really need a clear weekend to finish Ludum Dare. The tech change in the middle didn't help.My main take away: Unity slowed me down. I'm too much of a programmer. When a game engine gets in the way, I can see all the different ways I would code myself out of the problem, but I can't see any solutions in the engine's context. Code is a ...

Ludum Dare 21 - Update 2

Sick of fighting with Unity. Switching to XNA. And, I have a party to goto now, so I don't expect too much of a game done by Sunday night. That's the way Ludum Dare's go!

Ludum Dare 21

I'm about half way throught this weekend's Ludum Dare 21 (althought the traffic level is really bad right now.)  The theme is Escape.Tools so far: Unity3d 3.4 Visual Studio 2010 Paint My Pac Man mechanic isn't exactly fun, but it too late in the contest now to change :(   I'm using momentum or forces to move the player, which at least one interesting difference over the classic game.  T...

Ludum Dare 19 is right around the corner, so let's take a moment to review my Ludum Dare Career.LD #6 - Light and Darkness, 2005 Puzzle Bots - IncompleteThere is, amazingly, still some evidence that I particpated in this one.
